MASTER OF ARTS PROGRAMME, WEEKEND
DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH
Widely recognized as one of the leading English departments in the nation, English at JU has long been known for its innovative research and excellence in teaching. Today, the English Department maintains its strong commitment to traditional areas of study, while also supporting groundbreaking research and teaching in new and interdisciplinary approaches to language and literary studies.
Experiential education allows students to use the theories and skills gained in the classroom to solve real-world problems, giving them an edge on the competition for jobs. Department of English at JU emphasizes active learning in the classroom and field research outside it, allowing students to act on what they have learned. We believe that students who learn by doing, learn more effectively.
Since 1970, the Department of English has promoted a rich tradition of reading, writing, and critical thinking. Graduates of our BA, MA, M.Phil, and PhD programmes have made meaningful contributions in the fields of education, the arts, business, the nonprofit sector, and government—shaping the world in which they live with the understanding, compassion, and communication skills they gained as English majors. Our gifted and dedicated faculty possess a diverse range of interests and specializations, and the Department of English has developed a curriculum that facilitates a comprehensive exploration of people, places, and topics from all eras and cultures, linking to numerous other disciplines. Given such a selection of engaging study options, students in our department are inspired to become lifelong learners who continue to gain—and share— knowledge long after their college studies have ended.
Our coverage of chronological fields extends from the medieval era to the twenty-first century, and includes a wide variety of subfields and wide range of approaches to the study of language, linguistics, English Language teaching, media, graphic narrative, comics, and video games, theatre, cinema, and visual culture, poetry and poetics, fiction and nonfiction, gender and race studies, literary and cultural theory, global Anglophone writing, animal and posthuman studies, psychoanalysis and affect studies, ecocriticism and climate change. Graduate seminars offer students and faculty opportunities to share work in progress and to read, hear, and discuss current work by scholars from other institutions.
Department of English at Jahangirnagar University has long been recognized as one of the top English departments in the country. Student-wise one of the largest departments in the university, the Department serves as an extraordinary center of creativity, inquiry, and discovery with a proud tradition of leadership in scholarship and teaching. With over three thousand alumni and four hundred active students, the Department offers not only opportunities for study of all aspects of English language and its literature, but also helps to create a well-developed, diverse, and active community– the community we gladly call the “English Family.” We aim in effect to equip our students both to read the world, and write the future, with subtlety, acumen and precision.
